Am currently in the internal struggle over whether Buffy the Vampire Slayer (BTVS) was a better show than Angel. I just finished re-watching the entire series seasons 1-7 of BTVS and am currently on season 3 of Angel and it's a really difficult decision because the tones of the two shows are different. I mean, there are pros and cons of both shows, BTVS pros: The Scooby Gang, Giles, Xany Xander, Willow of Darkness and Oz. Cons: Dawn, Season 5 as a whole, the whole Initiative Debacle (although I did kind of like Riley) and Mopy Buffy for the better part of season 6. Angel pros: Angel is a badass, Lorne (the Host) and his journey home to Pylea (Props to Numfar's Dance of Joy), Angel singing Mandy at Caritas and dancing like a spazz at Cordy's party or Harmony's return in Season 5 (On working at Wolfram and Hart: "Where else can an undead gal in the city get a good paying job?"). Angel cons: Connor - the teenage years, dropping Cordy in Season 5 and the bleak ending to the series. (Why oh why did Wesley have to die and why the hell didn't Buffy or someone from the SG come to help? What, Angel gets no love? He saved your ass a many a time back in Sunnydale)
I mean, obviously Angel is bleaker than BTVS, perhaps because the main story thread is about redemption and fighting the good fight even if you may be on the losing side. I suppose it's about trying to do the right thing and how we sometimes fail as well as sometimes succeed even if we do the wrong thing. To me BTVS was always about friendships and how a little help from your friends makes a world of difference, Buffy may have been "The Chosen One" but she was always surrounded by supportive friends (for the most part). I also think that BTVS was a little bit zanier than Angel and I mean this as a collective series as a whole although "Smile Time" was perhaps one of the funniest things I have ever seen on television ("Angel, you're... cute!" Fred to Puppet Angel). Angel definitely had a darker edge to it and it really kind of explored the depths of people's despair and loneliness.
It's like this, BTVS made me laugh and entertained me but Angel kind of touched me, I mean who didn't get teary when they watched "A Whole in the World"? I mean c'mon people, who didn't get misty when a dying Fred said "Why can't I stay?" Why, indeed.
Perhaps my internal debate will go ever on.
