Pet People

People and their pets.

I was reading a post over at The Infernal Journal by N@ and it got me to thinking about how people with pets often feel profound connections with them and that people without pets sometimes don’t get what all the fuss is about. It’s not that I am saying that people without pets don’t sympathize; it’s just that I think that they don’t sympathize the same way.

Sometimes people don’t get the whole pet thing, they think that animals should be treated like animals – end of story - but for those of us who have animals or have had animals there’s an understanding that once they enter our households they’re our family. What’s so great about pets is how that if you feed them well and rub their tummies from time to time they will love you without fail. How many people in our lives can we say that about?

I don’t have a dog right now but I grew up in a household filled with dogs so I know the bond that can exist between owner and pet. One day I would like to have a dog but right now it’s just not feasible with my lack of time and living space so cats are where it’s at for me at this point in my life. I like the fact that they are so independent and don’t require a lot of attention, although the younger one (Kiwi) is a little bit more affectionate than what I was used to after fifteen years with Whitey.

Sometimes I wonder what life would be without my kitties and whether or not it would be easier, you know, without having to buy the food or the kitty litter or having to clean up hairballs and I honestly think that life would be kind of boring and lonely at home without them. They are my confidantes, my couch companions and most importantly, my furry little friends that like me just the way I am.
